Boston Calling, Creating a Family Experience

*I attended Boston Calling last year via a media pass. This post is about my experience and what families can expect going into this year and coming years. All opinions are mine.

When I first became a mother, I was did what a lot of us do, and I cut back on some of the outings that I most loved to do before becoming a parent. This included seeing concerts and heading to outdoor festivals. Living outside of Boston, we have a pretty great music scene and knowing that Boston Calling supports a lot of local artists, I had always wanted to go...but, KIDS. But wait, people are bringing their kids to Boston Calling? Yes. Boston Calling is actually pretty kid friendly, with a bit of preparation from savvy parents.

Guster has a special place in my (and Boston's) heart dating back to my teenage self so I most definitely wanted to go and as a fan, my 5 year old son had started listening too. He had very loosely inquired as to when he would get to see Guster and since I'm no fool, I was like kid, you get very cranky after 7pm so I don't know when we'll get to see Guster together.  So when I heard that they were playing the 2019 festival, and at 4pm no less, I knew that I wanted to go and try to take Wes as well. But was/is Boston Calling really family friendly?

So first, I'll start by saying that in order to go to Boston Calling, or any event as a parent with children who wants to enjoy themselves, you're going to want to go prepared. I mean, I prepare myself to a trip to the grocery store so since I knew that we were going to be gone, literally all day, that I'd need to beef up the bag I was packing. Keep in mind that they do not allow backpacks, I think I got away with mine because it's more like a purse. Next time I would probably bring a bag and consider a locker inside the festival. But all that said, Boston Calling has done a good job of making the atmosphere very family friendly, especially during the day. Let's start by saying that kids 10 and under don't need a wristband. I saw kids of all ages, from people baby wearing to older kids and then of course, little guys like mine. Boston Calling is welcoming of kids but you know your children best so keep their thresholds in mind for any of the things I'll mention in the rest of the blog.

What can you expect

You can expect to take either public transportation or catch a ride share to the Harvard Athletic complex.  I usually drive and park almost anywhere I go but there is literally nowhere to park close to the grounds. We took the redline from Alewife into Harvard Square then caught a Lyft back and forth to the train. It was easy peasy. If we could do it, anyone can. There's bike parking on site if that's your style or if you're kids are older, you can walk from public transportation to the grounds. More info on this piece can be found in the BC FAQs.

You can expect to be in the weather. Whether it's raining, very cold for May or extremely hot for May (which was our experience), you're going to be outside the majority of the day. There are a few places of "shelter" but you shouldn't plan to be able to take refuge there for good portions of time as they are being used for different acts and performers. With kids of any age, they will no doubt get whiny so just be prepared to listen to it a bit (or alot depending on your kids lol) and give them time to chill in between the things you want to see.

You can expect there to be crowds. Obviously, right? With kids, you may not want to rush the stage for obvious reasons but the beauty of the layout is that there is plenty of space to sit back, a good distance from any given stage and enjoy the music. I took Wes fairly close to the stage for Guster but it was a decision I made based on the crowd, the timing (it was daylight), I had my cousin there to keep an eye out and I had made friends with the group around us who sort of took it upon themselves to create space for him. Had it been the evening, I would have hung back so that I could keep any eye out. As much as Boston Calling welcomes people of all ages, these are still outdoor concerts so you'll want to make the best decision for your crew. I have been to other festivals, like Lollapalooza, and Boston Calling does not have a drunken, druggie or messy vibe to it. Though there were crowds, I did not feel unsafe, even as it got later into the evening.

You can expect a good amount of walking. The stages are not miles away from eachother but you do have to walk to and fro depending on what acts you want to see. This is a music festival afterall... but with kids, their legs are smaller, their attention spans are somewhat shorter and you're going to want to give them time to sit, even if it's in the shade on the ground, before asking them to move on.

You can expect there to be plenty of food and beverage vendors. We had our choice of so many different types of food and drinks. My little guy chose ice cream and Sprite but I was able to choose from a variety of different meals, all of which accepted cash and credit cards when purchasing. I, as a prepared mother, had snacks like fig bars and applesauce pouces in my bag but when faced with all the awesome options, Wes wanted nothing to do with my ho hum purse food.

If you're a nursing/pumping parent, keep in mind that I checked in with the team and there is no designated area for this purpose at this time. I'd say that there may be the opportunity to use the Arena area between shows or even during as it's dark in there during shows and there are actual bathrooms in there, not portable toilets. At best, you'll be figuring this out on the fly but I'd wager that if you're adventurous with your baby, you're up for it!

What should you bring

A lot will depend on your kids' needs and wants but there are some general things that I would suggest you bring. Wear comfortable shoes, bring hats for the whole family, sunglasses if need be and pack factory sealed snacks and water. If you require special sunscreen for sensitive skin, you'll want to pack that but I was happy to see that Boston Calling provided dispensers, much like you'd find in bathrooms, that actually had sunscreen there on site. Even the most prepared parents might pack an almost empty tube of SPF so I loved watching all the people taking advantage of the free sunscreen there.

You can bring a factory sealed water bottle or an empty one to fill at the hydration stations that Boston Calling has spread across the grounds. You'll want to stay hydrated and keep your crew hydrated no matter the weather. That's just good festival etiquette. I brought my Nalgene and just attached to my backpack strap for the day and it worked like a charm.

I bought Wes a pair of concert headphones and I'm glad I did. It was very loud for him but with the headphones, he was living the dream and I could enjoy the music without having him whining at me. We even used these same ones for Kidz Bop later in the Summer. I think these are a good bet for any parent bringing their kids to a show. I tried using the little foam ones with Wes and they just did not fly. Better safe than sorry, especially when you're spending good money on tickets.

Lockers are available if you need to bring more than you can actually carry throughout the day. Lockers will be available as a safe & secure place to store your belongings while at the festival. For your convenience, they have lockers available both inside and outside of the festival. You can reserve your locker INSIDE the festival in advance here. Lockers are $15 per day or $40 for the three day weekend.

I didn't regret bringing Wes to Boston Calling. If you're the type of parent that wants to take the time and opportunity for adventure with your music loving kid, then this is as good a festival as I've been to that creates a welcoming atmosphere for the crew. With some normal family preparation, you can head to some of your favorite acts one day with kids, then head back in evenings for headliners wit friends. With the wristbands, your flexibilty is right there, so it's what you make of it. We're headed back this year to see some awesome acts, so would love to hear about your plans to take in some Memorial Day weekend music!

Boston Burger Company with My Crew

A few weekends back, the Propah Family hit up the Boston Burger Company in Harvard Square to partake in an absolutely wonderful and deliciously casual lunch. One thing I can count on in almost any situation is that both my husband and child will both partake in a juicy burger because plainly put, they're two growing meat eaters! Rather than just having a regular old burger, we were super stoked to be able to have our choice of, what I would consider, the best Burgers in Boston. There were no complaints from our family whether it was the cold beer, appetizers, the service or the burgers themselves. The menu has what you might call "basics" (burgers and fries) but they have so many takes on those basics that it's exciting. Check out the menu if you don't believe what I'm sayin'!  It was all the perfect Sunday afternoon meal if you ask me.

From my husband's Mac Attack (homemade 4-cheese mac & cheese, bacon *featured on Diner's, Drive-Ins, and Dives) to my Ranch Burger (obvi smothered in cheese and Ranch dressing), it was all delicious and pretty dang filling for the price. Whether you visit the Harvard Square, Somerville or Boston location, I am sure that you'll have a delicious and affordable meal that is both casual but does not compromise.

You can follow Boston Burger Company on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to catch up on all the delicious business that's happening!

*Boston Burger Company invited us for lunch which we enjoyed on the house. All opinions are 100% my own and as always thank you for supporting those who support Prim and Propah!

The Perfect Treat Yourself Day

Last week, I took the day off from work and booked it outta my house for a day specifically for me! No ifs, ands or buts about it, I needed a day of self care and time by myself to reflect on my business but mostly to treat myself to some services, yummy food and shopping where I don't have a toddler hanging off of me! Thing is, you gotta have a plan so you can make the most of your time away because, eventually, reality beckons and you've got to get back. I have some tips and tricks on how I make the most out of my days off, so what are you waiting for? Treat Yo Self!

Find a spot where you can do a lot at once: I love The Street in Chestnut Hill. You may have seen me post about them before. What I love about this shopping center is that it can be a one stop shop for me and for a day like this, it was the perfect destination. With nail salons, facialists, blow dry bars, makeup, food and shopping it only made sense to plan a day at The Street because I wouldn't need to go anywhere else!

Make a plan: Don't just head out without a plan. Big mistake, lady! If you want the day to go as smoothly as possible, to keep you relaxation level at "total zen" all day, then you have to do the legwork in advance. Make appointments, don't just wing it. Here's an example of my game plan:

830am: Amazing manicure and pedicure at Miniluxe
1100am:  Fabulous Fitskin facial with the team at skoah
1200pm: Lunch break at the delicious Juice Press
1245pm: Post Lunch Stop at Splendid, because you know I gotta shop!
130pm: Wash and Style at Be Styled Blow Dry Bar
2:30pm: Pick up some makeup at Bluemercury
3:00pm: Sipping on Tea at David's Tea

See? It's a plan. I made appointments where necessary but knew that I would have to go with the flow but if you've got an idea of what you want to achieve, then you'll need to map it out or that day off/away, won't be as dreamy as you'd like.

Have fun/ a great attitude: If you're feeling good and exuding good vibes, you'll be happy and you'll be making others around you happy as well! Isn't it scientifically proven that if you smile you'll be happier even if you're not happy right that moment? (stops to try it) Note: BE HAPPY!

Cherish the time: Enjoy each and every piece of your day individually. While getting your nails done, enjoy the process, take in your surrounding, chat with your manicurist. Getting a facial or massage? Let yourself relax and sink into the really special service you're receiving.  Eat your food slowly, appreciate the time you've got in the hair chair, take your sweet time choosing a new tea to try. This is your day to relax and rejuvenate yourself, whatever it is that makes you happy!

What do you do on your days off? What makes you feel special?!

* I worked with The Street on an Instagram takeover. Some services were complimentary while others I paid for myself. All opinions are 100% my own. I just want you to Treat Yo Self!

A few nights ago, I kissed the baby and man goodbye and went on my own, to a Girls Night Out with Alice's Table. I had only very vaguely explored the art of flower arranging (like trimming store bought flower and plopping them in a vase like "so") so when the opportunity arose to do some legitimate flower arranging in the fine city of Boston, well, I didn't hesitate. It was held on Newbury St at the Met Bar Back Bay and you know what? Even though I was by my lonesome, I had a great time and talked to a lot of new ladies and drank some fancy adult lady drinks. It was very enjoyable so I can just imagine how much fun I would have had with some of my gal pals.

When you head to an event, it's about one thing: having fun learning to do something that is of value to any crafty/fun/creative/flower loving lady... Oh, and also? There's cocktails (be still my heart) and they show you how to make them. Oh, and they give you the recipes for both the cocktail and your arrangements to take home. The gals at Alice's Table just want you to have fun, maybe learn something and then if you're so inspired, do some creating at home. There were definitely some things I learned in my gin haze (yes, I treated myself to TWO G+T's) that I can use when I grab a bouquet from my local farm stand or even grocery store but even if you're having too much fun to catch everything, the gals have you covered with their recaps. Want to check out my event, Thanksgiving Harvest, click here.

Cabbage Flowers, artichokes, sunflowers, seeded eucalyptus, magnolia leaves and more filled a tiny container of love that I built fueled by a yummy rum drink (recipe to come next week just in time for the holiday) and a night away from responsibility. I managed to get it home in one piece and the arrangement looked amazing on our dining room table in the morning light, I just had to snap a shot. I would most definitely sign up for another event from the team at Alice's table. They seem to love what they are doing and want to expand by bringing on ambassadors. I urge you to check them out if this kind of fun night out it something that piques your creative, cocktail loving interests.

Why I am Adventurous with my Hair

As some of you may have seen in some recent Instagram snaps, my hair color has gone from bleached blonde to pink in recent weeks. It's something that I have been thinking about doing for awhile and when a stellar opportunity arose, I just couldn't let it pass me by. Now you're probably thinking (although I hope you aren't), "she's a mother of a young child, why would she go to such lengths to make her hair pink? She's in her (early) 30's!" My response to those types of thoughts are, I gotta be me and that means being adventurous with my hair.

The only time that I have ever been patient enough to let my hair grow well below my shoulders was in preparation for my wedding updo and even then, the struggle was real. I love to try new things and when my hair gets long, it's the ultimate in PAIN IN THE @$$ERY. My hair is thick like a horse's mane, my friends and it takes a quarter century to dry with a hair dryer. I get impatient and I am impulsive. I have had really bad haircuts from cheap chain salons because I just "have to get my hair cut today". But by the same token, I have had some really exceptional haircuts on a whim as well. At the end of the day, your hair grows or can be cut again to fix a bad haircut. My hair is my way of expressing myself and trying new things. You only live once, am I right?

I have to give it to my girl, Courtney at Mitchell John Salon in the Financial District who took such care with my color and cut. I have NEVER had someone so excited about how it came out and I couldn't be more excited to help her grow her clientele. If you go see her? Mention my name and you'll get 20% off your services. That's a pretty great deal in the heart of Boston!

How are you adventurous with your appearance?

WomInspire: Emily Cunningham of True Moringa

In the Boston community, True Moringa is one of those success stories that we all love to talk about. It's how I first discovered the brand, actually. Another blogger mentioned that Emily and her business partner, Kwami Williams, had built a beauty brand that fit into so many of my "desirable" categories. I love to see a line of products that is not only natural (and works!) but to see that they produce things in an earth friendly, responsible way is something that you can't find in your average beauty brand. I had a quick chat with Emily Cunningham and just have to say that this is the type of women who takes the phrase "You can't change the world" and leaves it in her dust.

Is it true that you guys started True Moringa while in college? #1 How ambitious + awesome and #2 Where did the inspiration come from?

First, College is the best time to start something! The resources we were able to access through our university networks, the mentorship, the energy of the social enterprise ecosystem of Boston - not to mention the benefits of being young and naive and not taking "no" for an answer :)

The inspiration and idea behind our brand and mission came from the farmers. My co-founder Kwami Williams and I were lucky enough to travel to Ghana through MIT's D-Lab to work on affordable technologies for developing countries. While there, we were struck by a paradox: there are 1.5 billion acres of fertile, uncultivated land in Africa and 120 million smallholder farmers living on that land earning less than $2 per day.

Think about exactly what that means- here we are, in the midst of the tropics where some of the most beautiful and valuable botanicals grow - and farmers are struggling to get by on subsistence crops. We knew there was huge untapped potential for high-value agriculture. The farmers came to us with the idea to commercialize one crop in particular called moringa, known locally as 'the miracle tree' for its medicinal properties. We went back to Cambridge to do some market research and study the benefits and were absolutely floored.

The seeds of the tree produce nature's best anti-aging moisturizing oil for hair and skin care. The leaves of the same tree are rich in nutrients, boasting more vitamin A than carrots, more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, and more protein than eggs per serving. The waste product of oil processing is an ideal organic fertilizer, poultry feed, and flocculant to purify water. The tree thrives in arid climates and produces leaves within two months and seeds within 8 months, mitigating risk for small farmers. Miracle tree indeed.

Local Lovin': Luxxie Boston, Foundation Wear for Every Woman

I recently stumbled upon Luxxie Boston (LuxxieBoston.com) on Twitter. It seems I follow enough savvy Bostonians that it surprised me that I hadn't run across this Boston based/Made in USA brand of women's foundation wear... that happens to also be fabulous. With a little moving and shaking, I was then chatting with Luxxie Boston co-founder Stefanie Mnayarji about the new baby and what sparked her interest in designing this fantastic line. She was willing to share a little about her and her brand with my P&P readers as well as show you a few of her pieces that have me over here swooning.

Julie Michaud Prettyology, a Must Visit on Newbury Street

Last week, I had the opportunity to hit up Julie Michaud Prettyology Boston for some facial and brow action... let me just start with the following sentiment... I felt the ultimate in pampering, which is what I would expect from a salon on Newbury Street but beyond that, the staff was supremely stellar and made me feel so comfortable. The visit even prompted me to write a positive Yelp! review and usually I reserve Yelp! reviews for venting ;-). The visit was that good.
