Best and Worst Dressed, Golden Globes 2014

Last night's Golden Globe awards were hilarious and full of honest moments. I really enjoyed staying up past my bedtime to see all the funny bits and actually know who the winners are before the lists come out in the morning. Obvi, while I watched the awards, I was compiling all of my favorite and not so favorite looks from the night. There were some real winners but oddly enough, I felt like there were some stellar actresses that were so poorly dressed! Bad clothes happened to such good people this year... anyhoo, let me just show you my faves and nots! Be sure to weigh in on yours too!

Best

Lupita Nyong'o in Ralph Lauren, my number one top pick of the night. That color with her complexion... she looks so stunning. Though reminiscent of Gwyneth's Tom Ford number from something or other, it really is something to behold. I would be surprised if she didn't show up on every single best dressed list today.

Kate Mara in J. Mendel, this may not be every one's cup of tea but something about her new hair color and the way that this dress is draped has made this one of my top picks. Cleavage like that doesn't hurt either!

Emma Watson in Dior Couture, puh-lease girl, this is no simple red dress... are those pants under there? Is it the illusion of pants? Will we ever know? One thing is for certain, Emma looks stunning and effortless.

Maternity Alert!

Olivia Wilde in Gucci made me feel like a disgusting pig when I saw her walk on stage... I was eating jelly beans at the time so felt as if I needed to get on the floor and start doing a pregnant plank or pump some iron or something. Can we talk about one of the most glamorous, pregnant creatures you've ever seen?

Drew Barrymoore in Monique Lhuillier, I loved this look not because Drew looked uber glamorous but because she just looked so dang adorable. She embraced her baby bump and went with something really cute and flowy. I know she will probably get a little flack for this look but I, personally, love it... also, if anyone gives her flack for this, then they are mean.

Kerry Washington in Balenciaga, three words... So.Freakin.Fabulous.

Leslie Mann in Dolce and Gabbana is beautiful in it's simplicity. Though the peplum is pretty played out at this point, for some reason I still find this dress stunning. Black, lacy and perfectly tailored is a thing of beauty.

Amy Adams in Valentino is stunning. This dress seems somewhat 70's inspired and being that her film American Hustle is set in the 70's, I thought this was an amazing choice for her. She has such tone and definition in her upper body, this dress just shows off everything a girl who looks like Amy would want to show off.

Emma Roberts in Lanvin, another simple black dress but it is pure perfection.

Amy Poehler in Stella McCartney, damn girl, you lookin' so fine tonight. I love the belt, I love the cutout, I love the shoulder. Amy looks phenominal.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Narciso Rodriguez, Julia has had some ill fitting looks or dresses that have swallowed her whole in the past. This dress? The exact, completely polar opposite.

Jessica Chastain in Givenchy, can you tell I was obsessed with anything black and perfectly fitted? Well, I was.

Honorable Mentions

Margot Robbie in Gucci, totally haven't seen Wolf of Wall Street and have no idea of her acting skills but one thing is for certain, this girl has a killer body and she wears Gucci like a boss. I had it in my honorable mention column but when she was on stage, and the light hit those crystals, this was nearly on my best dressed. Stunning.

Lena Dunham in Zac Posen, she may land on some worst dressed lists but let me tell you, this is a step up from almost every red carpet look she has sported in the past year or so. She is loyal to Zac Posen and I give her props for wearing such a daring color. She is truly one of those girls that just does what she wants.

Laura Dern in Roberto Cavalli, this is another dress that photos don't do justice for. When she was on stage, this dress just lit up the room and she looked stunning. So sparkly, so svelte and still such a beauty.

Julianna Marguilies in Andrew GN, I find this to be such a classy dress. Yes, if you look closely, that gold etching does appear to be coral designed but dude, I don't care. A sucker for black and gold am I, this dress looked fantastic on Julianna, who has made questionable dress choices in the past.

Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein, a perfect color for a blue eyed blond, fitting the body like a glove... Calvin Klein has such a way to dress a woman that no matter how simple it seems from a design perspective, it always looks pretty amazing.

Elizabeth Moss in J. Mendel, though I wasn't crazy about her hair, this dress came alive on stage when Elizabeth won her Golden Globe. Mixed media, black and what looked like maroon or purple, I thought this dress had something really interesting to say.

Worst

Berenice Bejo in what I think is Giambattista Valli, where do I start? Button up front? Lopsided floral ruffles on both the sleeves and hips? Long train? What a gorgeous woman but what a horrible dress.

Joanna Newsom, Andy Samberg's new wife, made the absolute wrong choice or her stylist did because this scream senorita, cha cha in mauve. I think if the sleeves came off it might have flown under the radar but since her husband won and so did his show, she got more air time than that dress deserved.

Paula Patton in Stephane Rolland Couture, OMG, what was she thinking? She is a beautiful woman and had she worn just a simple, fitted white dress, this would have been so much more successful. There is something to be said about the occasional asymmetrical look but when your dress looks like it is going to take you over, you might want to rethink before leaving the house. You were a presenter for Pete's Sake!

Zoe Saldana in Prabal Gurung, Where do I look? So much going on. Must look away from ugly asymmetrical hem. Arm straps don't make sense to me. What is happening at the crotchal region? Mama doesn't understand.

Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung, first and foremost, I can see wrinkles which is my pet peeve. Secondly, this was belted when it was on the runway, which might have helped Sandra here. Thirdly, this dress just did not do her amazing figure or talent any justice. The colors skew junior and Sandra Bullock, my dear friends, does not shop in juniors.

Hayden Panettiere in Tom Ford, apparently she begged to be dressed in Tom Ford to which I say, "You should have begged to wear a different dress." Up close, that neck broach type deal is just too big. The dress also doesn't look high end runway to me. It looks like something a girl might wear to prom these days, or so I would think since I am many years past my prom-ing age.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior, all you have to do is check the 'nets right now and you will see J-Law being compared to The Little Mermaid, once granted legs, dressed by Scuttle in ship sails and rope... I do love The Little Mermaid but I do not love this dress. When is her contract with Dior up?

Tina Fey, this was the first look I saw on Tina and I think that it didn't do her or any of her show looks any justice. Are those flamingos? She is swimming in it and did so much better the rest of the night!

Julia Roberts in Dolce and Gabbana, I get that Julia wanted to look sophisticated and also, she is Julia Roberts so can do pretty much whatever she wants but that being said, this dress has been done before and every time before has been the same snoozefest. Her hair and makeup looked great but that dress did nothing for her.

Uma Thurman in Versace, this was one tight, black dress that I did not like. If you looked closely, there were all different types of textures. In addition, though Uma has a killer figure, this dress hugged her in some un-flattering places. She has made amazing choices in the past. This dress? Not one of them.

Julie Delpy, too much dress for a petite and lovely woman. I would have loved to have seen her in something royal blue and form fitting. This gown was not a favorite of mine at all.

Megan Mullally, funny lady + funny floatie sleeves + funny glasses + funny haircut = unsuccessful Golden Globes look. Lose the sleeves lady and you would have been cool.

Who were your faves and not so muches?

  1. I seriously laughed when Paula Patton walked out onto the stage to present an award - that girl could not walk in her dress! She needed a slit (or two!) in that skirt!

  2. Amanda, I always look forward to your award season dress recaps! I agree with many of your best dressed AND worst dressed. My best dressed was Margot Robbie, hands down. I thought she was stunning. Olivia, Julia Louis-D, Julianne, and Reese looked amazing too. I was so disapointed in Jennifer Lawrence. Biggest fail of the night for me, since she usually kills it. Also on my worst dressed: Lena, Zoe, Julia Roberts, Sandra, and Paula P. I laughed out loud at this: "Zoe Saldana in Prabal Gurung, Where do I look? So much going on. Must look away from ugly asymmetrical hem. Arm straps don't make sense to me. What is happening at the crotchal region? Mama doesn't understand.". I love you, girl!! LOL

  3. I am always so confused by women with killer bodies, like Paula, adding about 40 lbs in ruffles. If I had her body it would have been sleek and sexy all the way.

  4. I was so befuddled by a lot of what people chose to wear last night. As you can see, I loved the ladies in black and dark colors but maybe that's because they generally look amazing. Zoe Saldana is so gorgeous but that dress was just a hot mess.

  5. LOVED the Emma Watson dress! It was definitely pants under there, the dress was backless and you could see the pants from behind, so unique, fresh, and young. Um, and don't get me started on those gorgeous pregnant mamas, amaaaazing - I wish!

  6. i agree with you for the most part except i really do not understand the dress/pants combo on emma. maybe i am just not fashion forward enough, haha! i just think a dress on its own would be so much prettier! i like the idea of sandra bullock's dress but you're right, it is wrinkled...how did that pass?!

  7. spot on. although I wasn't a fan of amy adams dress at all. the idea was a good one but it was loose on top and the color didn't really do her any favors. I completely missed uma and megan mullally - yikes. also, emma watson's dress/combo would've been SO COOL if the red topper was reversed with the bigger reveal in front. it almost looked like it was on backwards

  8. I saw the pants after this post went live and loved the dress type thing more! Very fashion forward. And seriously those Mamas were so gorgeous!

  9. I am always surprised when gowns are wrinkly. You'd think someone would have a steamer somewhere before arrivals haha, geesh!

  10. I have seen that people either totally dug Emma's ensemble or they didn't get it. It's why we are so wonderful, we have opinions ;-) ... and I will have to politely disagree with you on Amy Adams. PS. Did you like love her acceptance speech? She is adorable.

  12. Your worst dressed commentary is hilarious. You need a job with E's Fashion Police. What in the world were Paula and Zoe thinking??? I mean, COME ON. They are both beyond beautiful and totally failed in the fashion and style department Sunday night. With that said, they both made it on my best beauty list. Margot Robbie was my #1 best dressed. I know so many people are loving Lupita Nyongo's dress but sadly I'm not a fan. I think Gwyneth hit a home run in that white Tom Ford cape + gown at the 2012 Oscars and she was actually my #1 best dressed that year.
